18/06/2012 - White cement intermodally to Goole (UK)

Rhenus Logistics-Safar has organised a first intermodal bulk transport in April using a lorry-lighter-coaster combination. CBR Brussels had given the assignment to transport more than 1,000 tonnes of white cement to Goole in the United Kingdom.

The distance of 10 km between the production unit in Harmignies and the nearest quay (of Omya in Maisières) was covered by truck. At that quay 970 tonnes of cement, destined for the outport of Brussels, were loaded into the barge "Phoenix". This operation took less than 16 hours. A small surplus was taken to Brussels by truck. In previous transports the entire 65 km route Harmignies-Brussels was carried out on the road, which not only was more time-consuming (36 hours), but also less suitable as far as CO2-emissions were concerned.
The transhipment in the Brussels outport from the lighter to the coaster MV "Ritske" went very smoothly, after which the latter travelled to Goole, where the goods were unloaded.

"This project proves that thanks to a good organisation, planning and flexibility between different companies, cost-competitive and sustainable intermodal transport is indeed possible", says Rhenus Logistics-Safar's director Bart Van Rossen. "The manufacturer CBR in particular was receptive to the possibilities offered. Certainly worth doing again!"
The other partners were: Omya quay (Maisières), Binnenlloyd (inland shipper), Cebo Maritime (coastal shipper) and Brussels Shipping (goods handling Brussels).
